Carnivore Diet Experimentation: 4 weeks

Week 1: Feeling Fatigued and Drained

You’ve heard from the likes of Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, Mikhaila Peterson and how a carnivore diet helped them solve their autoimmune disorders, depression, and lose fat. So, I decided to try it with my husband and I asked him to note down everything ranging from mood, emotions, bloat, bowel movements, and just general hunger and satiety. So here’s our summary so far:

Week 1MeMy husband
Day 1– Felt great, no real difference, probably because I still drank my daily coffee.
– Pee was bright yellow (all minerals leaving my body)
Felt terrible, was sick of meat by lunch
Day 2Felt horrible, no coffee – just tea, had to pee every thirty minutes.
Scared to drink water when I was outsidthe – first poop
Still feeling horrible
Kind of lost his appetite – no poop still
Day 3 Felt worse than the day before.
Lost appetite.
Spiritually and emotionally dull.
Wanted to quit
Hates it
Wants to give up and cheat.
Low spiritually and emotionally dull.
Day 4-5Feeling much better
Regular bowel movements.
No need for coffee – but still drink tea
Feeling better but not the best.
Until he checked his reflection in the mirror and started noticing less bloat – an instant vanity boost
Day 6No big difference in waist circumference
Slightly less bloating
Feels good, tells me we should’ve tried this diet earlier, I agree
Day 7Feel good but sleep is not great for the past three nights –
Could be affecting energy levels
Feels great, spiritually dull

What is the ‘Carnivore Diet’?

So, I stumbled upon the carnivore diet when I came across Mikhaila Peterson’s diet plan which is basically red meat, salt and water – kind of depressing if I’m honest. But what’s more depressing are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis that she had to struggle with her whole life which included having her ankle replaced twice and hip once.

Joe Rogan tried it out and lost fat and Jordan Peterson, Mikhaila’s dad tried it for his depression and rosacea (there were other issues too, but we move). I decided to give it a try too, because of the frustrating layer of fat that sits on my stomach area, and me trying everything and anything to lose.

It was getting quite frustrating to come across conflicting statements/research which is why I decided to launch this in the first place and try it for myself.

The carnivore diet is basically eating ruminant meats (ie. beef, lamb, goat, elk, chicken) and little to no dairy (I had to eliminate full dairy milk and greek yogurt, both were staples in my diet).

Carnivore Diet Meal Plan (Low Carb High Protein)

Little to no dairy is recommended, especially when starting out in the carnivore low carb high protein diet because it sets a baseline.

My diet for now looks like this:

  • frozen raw liver that is swallowed so I don’t have to taste it (squeeze a lemon to mask the taste)
  • Chicken,
  • red meat (brisket, steak, mince, and t-bone),
  • lamb, and
  • tea with milk powder.

No coffee, which was very hard to give up but I’m handling it well considering the extreme elimination diet that the carnivore diet is.

What does the Carnivore Diet do?

It simply serves as an elimination diet and most people do not do it long-term (only eating meat and nothing else). However, some people have used it to reverse PCOS, diabetes, or any other conditions where hyperinsulinemia is an issue (most of the diseases today).

I plan to bring in fruits and raw milk but probably nothing else, because gluten and ‘dairy’ is terrible for my body and has been shown to increase inflammation. I don’t like inflammation.

Chronic inflammation has been linked to many diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. These are, unfortunately what most of us struggle with, and for me, it’s my PCOS which I plan to reverse entirely.

The carnivore diet is basically a low-carb high protein diet that makes your body better adapted to breaking down fat instead of carbs. This can lead to other issues like fatigue and irritability because of the loss of minerals and also because our bodies are not adapted to breaking down fat efficiently because we have trained them to break down carbs. So, your kidneys let out water (where minerals like sodium, magnesium, and potassium follow) which can be dehydrating and brings about a lack of energy.

This usually happens within the first few weeks of a diet like the carnivore diet but also keto. As you can see from the table above, my pee was very yellow even though I was drinking heaps of water (2-3L a day) so I knew it wasn’t dehydration.

What to expect in the first few weeks of any low carb high protein diet (carnivore or keto)

Onto week 2, stay tuned for more research on PCOS, Fatty Liver Disease, and Diabetes and how to reverse these.
